A post by Anne Clelland.
Peering into cat cages at the Humane Society, seeking the young, short-haired, golden cat of my dreams, I watched a tabby rub its face and fur against wire bars. A tangle of kittens, pointy ears and tails like stars, mewed and tumbled. A brown Persian brother and sister cowered in a corner, round-eyed. One female sat in the middle of the lowest tier of cages, shifting her weight from one front foot to the other, regarding me intently. Inexplicably, I began to cry. I yearn for meaningful, wordless connection with other beings. Instead of my dream cat, I took home the black, long-haired, five-year-old from the bottom cage. She has golden eyes.
